Alcobaça Bahia, Brazil – Brazilian Beach Life

Reconnecting with the In-Laws after a 10-year absence, which means a trip to “Alcobaça”.  Alcobaça is a small fishing village on the southern coast of Bahia where my wife’s family has had a history for years.  I first went there in 1987, and not much has changed since then.  Brazil is famous for its beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema; however, you’re just as likely to get mugged as getting sunburned at those urban icons.  It’s best to head out to small rural coastal towns like Alcobaça if you want the ocean.

The state of Bahia is colorful yet uncomplicated.  In Alcobaça, the beach is lined with numerous “Barracas” or palm-thatched bars, with all the music, cold beer, and fried food you can handle.  Tuesday, Thursday, any day—it’s always Saturday at the beach.  Sandles, a T-shirt, and shorts.  Cold beers, lunch, a few more beers, nap, back to the beach, snack, beer, and home to sleep it off.  Prices are always right, and you have friends everywhere.
