Montevideo, Uruguay – The in-between……

I spent a few nights in Montevideo while traveling between Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay is a small country sandwiched between the two giants with mixed Portuguese and Spanish colonial influence. Marvelous and expansive farms and cattle ranches line the highway to the capital, so you know you are going to eat well. Montevideo is described in travel guides as “laid back” with a small-town feel, and the people we met were wonderful. My own personal highlight was an upscale steak house where they allowed me behind the grill in the Punta Carretas area on the coast. Uruguay faces a tough comparison when you’ve just come from historic Buenos Aires and are then headed to energetic Brazil, but then again, why compare?
