Minas Gerais and my Miguez Family

I’d say I come from an average-sized American family and have one brother, several cousins, etc. My wife, Katia, on the other hand, is one of 10+ children, and her parents were part of similar-sized families. Do the math, and that equates to dozens of cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles, taking the concept of family to an entirely new level. Most of her relatives live in northern Minas Gerais, a Brazilian state just north of Rio de Janeiro that’s famous for its food and work ethic. A trip to Minas means visiting the clan and all the social engagements that are the rule.

The best thing about having a large family is actually being genuinely accepted into it. After 40 years and being able to speak some Portuguese, I feel like a part of the crew, adopted, and look forward to endless “get-togethers” while we’re there. I’ve always been a photographer and love pulling out numerous pics of backyard BBQs shot in the ’80s, 90’s, etc., with most of the same beer, beef, guitars, faces, and smiles. It’s a lot of fun. A special note about my two older brothers-in-law Patriarchs for the family most of their lives (and remain so) as their father passed young. Even after 40 years, I sometimes feel like they are still sizing me up and want to know my intentions with their little sister.
