Nazare, Portugal…..Home of the Giants

Naraze Portugal

March in Portugal is one of the best times to visit.  “Off” or “Shoulder” season, the truth is, the place is not overrun by tourists, and you get to enjoy some of the real Portugal.  Open tables at the local restaurants, great prices, and always find a seat at the bar.  March is also the end of the season for the waves at Nazare.  This small oceanside village about halfway between Lisbon and Porto is world-renowned for waves.  The Arctic winter storms mixed with the unique underwater canyon off Nazare’s beach create the unique conditions that attract pro surfers and their teams to ride the biggest and best.  The Guinness Book of World Records says a guy named Sebastian S. rode a 93-foot wave there in 2020, which is like riding a 10-story building.

Timing is everything. If you want to see the big waves, you need to track the weather, which occurs only during certain months, etc., etc. But if you do time it right, work your way out to the point, get some sunshine as well, there is nothing like it on earth.

Farol …Note, No way a Photographer of my skill level does justice to the majesty of the Nazare waves….
