A Bucket List Item for sure, the truth is I’d never visited Norway. Norway equals Fjords, Fjords means a boat, so we sprung for the famous Hurtigruten Cruise experience. This was a 14-day, 32-port marathon that received rave reviews. Norway and Hurtigruten are not known for being cheap; however, as luck would have it, I found a “Black Friday” special online and got the entire package for under $6 K.
Our tour departed from Bergen in the South and traveled north along the coast, through the Arctic Circle, to the westernmost point in Norway (Kirkenes), and then returned. We were allowed to disembark from the ship at the stops with enough time to exercise, shop, drink, and feel like a vacation. We traveled in March; winter was ending, and there was still a high probability we’d see the Northern Lights.
It was truly a wonderful experience. The weather was crisp but accommodating. We saw the Northern Lights. While the Fjords were great, the real enjoyment was the excellent food on the ship, the traditional towns we visited, and great people we met on the ship. We ate more seafood in two weeks than in the last two years. Yes, a pint of beer in Norway costs $15 bucks. What a treat.
